Paul Kemprecos

Paul Kemprecos sets his detective/adventure novels by the sea, on the seas, and under the sea. His series about philosophic fisherman, charter boat captain, and part-time PI Aristotle “Soc” Socarides made its Shamus Award–winning debut in 1991 with Cool Blue Tomb, took a hiatus after the sixth book, and returned with Grey Lady (2013), then Shark Bait (2018), in which the main suspect is a great white shark named Emma. Kemprecos introduced a second series in 2013 with The Emerald Scepter about former Navy SEAL and undersea robotics engineer Matinicus “Matt” Hawkins. The follow-up novel, The Minoan Cipher (2016), was nominated for best paperback novel by the International Thriller Writers Association. In the 1999-2013 interim, Kemprecos collaborated with Clive Cussler on eight NUMA Files novels featuring special assignments agent Kurt Austin, whose marine-oriented missions protect human lives and the world’s resources. A longtime newspaper journalist, Kemprecos was inspired to write marine adventure novels by his interviews with salvage crews competing to find and recover Whydah, an 18th century pirate ship that went aground off the Cape. He is at work on his ninth “Soc” novel at his home on Cape Cod.
