Kheryn Callender is an author and editor who is dedicated to promoting diversity in literature for young readers. They are an associate editor at Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. Their debut novel is Hurricane Child, a middle-grade book about Caroline Murphy, whose life is terminally unlucky because she was born during a hurricane. Like Callender (who is from the US Virgin Islands), Caroline lives on St. Thomas. Caroline must face her demons, her complicated relationship with a mother who abandoned her, and the confusing feelings she has for her only friend, Kalinda. Callender’s first young-adult novel, This Is Kind of an Epic Love Story, will be released at the end of October 2018.
