Gish Jen

Gish Jen writes both fiction and nonfiction. Her stories have appeared in The New Yorker, Granta, Ploughshares, and other magazines. Four of them have appeared in The Best American Short Stories, including The Best American Short Stories of the Century, edited by John Updike. Featured in a PBS American Masters series on the American Novel, Jen is also the author of the novels Typical American (1991), Mona in the Promised Land (1996), The Love Wife (2004), and World and Town (2010), winner of the Massachusetts Book Award. Her honors include fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, as well as a Lannan Award in Literature and a Mildred and Harold Strauss Living Award. She gave the Massey Lectures in the History of American Civilization at Harvard in 2012, from which emerged Tiger Writing (2013).  Her most recent book is a work of nonfiction entitled The Girl at the Baggage Claim: Explaining the East-West Culture Gap. She has a new novel coming out in 2019.
