Leslie Gilbert-Lurie

Leslie Gilbert-Lurie is a human rights lawyer, philanthropist, and writer. She has worked for the betterment of children in the Los Angeles area and around the world. Gilbert-Lurie is the cochair of the Human Rights Watch’s Los Angeles Committee and is also a founding board member, past president, and cochair elect of the Alliance for Children’s Rights, and a board member of the Skirball Cultural Center. She served for fourteen years on the Los Angeles County Board of Education, with three terms as president. Gilbert-Lurie has also worked at the law firm of Manatt, Phelps, Rothenberg, and Tunney and was a law clerk in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. She also worked for many years as a producer, executive, and writer at NBC. She is the author of the gripping memoir, Bending toward the Sun: A Mother Daughter Memoir (2009), written with her mother, Ruth Lurie. The memoir recounts Ruth Lurie’s experience during the German invasion of Poland when she was a child, and the history of their family.
