David Leonard

Born in Dublin, David Leonard first arrived in Boston in 1992 to pursue a doctorate in philosophy at Boston College. In 2009, with extensive experience in technology and management consulting, Leonard joined the management team at the Boston Public Library, one of Boston’s great cultural and civic treasures. In 2016, the Library’s Board of Trustees and Mayor Martin J. Walsh appointed Leonard president of the BPL. The BPL’s library system includes the historic central library in Copley Square and twenty-five branch libraries, as well as an archival center. The library collection includes more than 23 million books, maps, manuscripts, and prints. Leonard has worked to modernize the library’s technology infrastructure and oversaw master planning and design for the stunning renovation of the central library. Leonard is also focused on enhancing access and customer experience throughout the library system.
